For centuries, Samarkand stood at the heart of the ancient Silk Road, connecting civilizations, cultures, and ideas between East and West. It later became the magnificent capital of Amir Timur’s empire and one of the greatest centers of science, architecture, and culture in the Timurid era.
At the heart of the city stands Registan Square, one of the most remarkable architectural ensembles of the Islamic world. Its three monumental madrasahs — Ulugbek, Sher-Dor, and Tilla-Kori — surround the square with their towering portals, intricate mosaics, and legendary blue tiles.
The first of them, the Ulugbek Madrasah, was built in the 15th century by Mirzo Ulugbek, the Timurid ruler and astronomer. It was not only a place of religious education, but also a center where mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and other sciences were studied.
Later, the Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kori madrasahs completed the magnificent ensemble we see today. Their walls preserve centuries of craftsmanship, knowledge, and the cultural legacy of our ancestors.
